A Princess of Mars – “Chapter 12: A Prisoner With Power” by Edgar Rice Burroughs

CHAPTER XII A PRISONER WITH POWER As I entered and saluted, Lorquas Ptomel signaled me to advance, and, fixing his great, hideous eyes upon me, addressed me thus: “You have been with us a few days, yet during that time you have by your prowess won a high position among us. Be that as it […]

A Princess of Mars – “Chapter 11: With Deja Thoris” by Edgar Rice Burroughs

CHAPTER XI WITH DEJAH THORIS As we reached the open the two female guards who had been detailed to watch over Dejah Thoris hurried up and made as though to assume custody of her once more. The poor child shrank against me and I felt her two little hands fold tightly over my arm. Waving […]

A Princess of Mars – “Chapter 10: Champion and Chief” by Edgar Rice Burroughs

posted by

CHAPTER X CHAMPION AND CHIEF Early the next morning I was astir. Considerable freedom was allowed me, as Sola had informed me that so long as I did not attempt to leave the city I was free to go and come as I pleased. She had warned me, however, against venturing forth unarmed, as this […]

A Princess of Mars – “Chapter 9: I Learn the Language” by Edgar Rice Burroughs

posted by

CHAPTER IX I LEARN THE LANGUAGE As I came back to myself I glanced at Sola, who had witnessed this encounter and I was surprised to note a strange expression upon her usually expressionless countenance. What her thoughts were I did not know, for as yet I had learned but little of the Martian tongue; […]

A Princess of Mars – “Chapter 8: A Fair Captive From the Sky” by Edgar Rice Burroughs

posted by

CHAPTER VIII A FAIR CAPTIVE FROM THE SKY The third day after the incubator ceremony we set forth toward home, but scarcely had the head of the procession debouched into the open ground before the city than orders were given for an immediate and hasty return. As though trained for years in this particular evolution, […]

A Princess of Mars – “Chapter 6: A Fight That Won Friends” by Edgar Rice Burroughs

posted by

CHAPTER VI A FIGHT THAT WON FRIENDS The thing, which more nearly resembled our earthly men than it did the Martians I had seen, held me pinioned to the ground with one huge foot, while it jabbered and gesticulated at some answering creature behind me. This other, which was evidently its mate, soon came toward […]

A Princess of Mars – “Chapter 5: I Elude My Watch Dog” by Edgar Rice Burroughs

posted by

CHAPTER V I ELUDE MY WATCH DOG Sola stared into the brute’s wicked-looking eyes, muttered a word or two of command, pointed to me, and left the chamber. I could not but wonder what this ferocious-looking monstrosity might do when left alone in such close proximity to such a relatively tender morsel of meat; but […]

A Princess of Mars – “Chapter 3: My Advent On Mars” by Edgar Rice Burroughs

posted by

CHAPTER III MY ADVENT ON MARS I opened my eyes upon a strange and weird landscape. I knew that I was on Mars; not once did I question either my sanity or my wakefulness. I was not asleep, no need for pinching here; my inner consciousness told me as plainly that I was upon Mars […]

A Princess of Mars – “Chapter Two: The Escape of the Dead” – Edgar Rice Burroughs

CHAPTER II THE ESCAPE OF THE DEAD A sense of delicious dreaminess overcame me, my muscles relaxed, and I was on the point of giving way to my desire to sleep when the sound of approaching horses reached my ears. I attempted to spring to my feet but was horrified to discover that my muscles […]

A Princess of Mars – “Chapter One: On The Arizona Hills” by Edgar Rice Burroughs

CHAPTER I ON THE ARIZONA HILLS I am a very old man; how old I do not know. Possibly I am a hundred, possibly more; but I cannot tell because I have never aged as other men, nor do I remember any childhood. So far as I can recollect I have always been a man, […]

The Good Lady Ducayne (1869 Short Story)

posted by

Written by Mary Elizabeth Braddon, The Good Lady Ducayne is a short story written way back before vampires were cool.  Vampires kinda have a lame name now, being over used and over abused, but M E Braddon knew how to write subtle prose to give a person chills in this vampiric short story of […]

Saturday Night Drive In: John Carter (Walt Disney 2012)

To kick off our drive in movie night we didn’t have to look far to find a movie that sums up what the science fiction and fantasy genre should be about.  It was hard not show Conan:  The Barbarian, however a prolific series by legendary Edgar Rice Burroughs we felt was the most all encompassing […]

Re-Animator (1985 Film) Review

posted by

Re-animator (1985) is a cult classic that is a rare gory treat for for horror movie enthusiasts. It’s loosely based off of H. P. Lovecraft‘s “Herbert West—Reanimator,” that was published in 1922. The short story was the first story to introduce zombies as uncontrollable scientifically re-animated corpses. I honestly believe that this movie, as well […]

Bunraku (2010 Film) Review

Bunraku, was written and directed by Guy Moshe (of 2006’s Holly). It’s set in a post-nuclear-war world in which guns have been banned.  Banned by who? One of the many unexplained plot holes in the film and are basically left for you to figure out. Most all violence in Bunraku is carried out with mostly melee […]

Akira (1988 Film) Movie Review

No other movie can be responsible for Western anime fandom than the epic classic Akira.  A 1988 film that should have been dated still feels as crisp and awesomely mind-blowing as the first day it was on the silver screen.   Even though years have gone on, the effects of Akira‘s legacy is still felt […]

Beyond: Two Souls (2013 Video Game) Review

For a very long time I’ve been saying that video games are the new movies.  The cinematic storytelling you see in video games these days is absolutely fantastic when done correctly.  When you allow a director and writer with a vision the ability to put their willpower and desire behind a project you will be […]

47 Ronin (2013 Film) Review

I love Samurai flicks!  I love Samurai stories!  I love Samurai mythology!  For a long period of my life I ate, drank, and peed Samurai mythology.  Those Japanese know how to tell a story!  That being said: No other story is more crucial to a country’s national identity than the story of the 47 Ronin.  […]

( Review #1 ) The New 52 in Review, A Brief Look at our Modern Mythology

I remember growing up and grabbing the occasional Superman comic when I was a teenager.  Instead of spending my allowance on candy like the other kids I thought a comic book would be the better value since it was non-perishable.  I kept doing this and ended up with a small but impressive comic book collection, […]
