After a prologue where we see the original Doctor Jekyll dies from falling from his house that had been set ablaze by an angry mob. It is then revealed that Dr. Jekyll had left behind an orphan. John Utterson agrees to adopt the boy since he has no children of his own.
Fast-forward about 30 years, Edward Jekyll is now the fiance to Dr. Utterson’s beautiful niece Lynn and has become an accomplished student of the Royal Academy of Science. However, he is expelled from the Academy when they discover his illegal experiments. Edward then learns he is the son of the original Dr. Jekyll and has inherited his old mansion as Dr. Lanyon tells him of the tragic events that unfolded around his father.
Edward moves Lynn into the estate and they then prepare for their marriage. Shortly thereafter he discovers his father’s old laboratory and he is then drawn to continue his father’s experiments in order to clear his father’s name.
Unfortunately, the son of Mr. Hyde has other plans and reenacts his father’s agenda and a murder spree ensues.
The Son of Dr. Jekyll was directed by Seymour Friedman and stars Louis Hayward, Jody Lawrance, Lester Matthews and Alexander Knox. It was financed and distributed by Columbia Pictures, it is based on a screenplay by Jack Pollexfen and Mortimer Braus. The film is a continuation of Robert Louis Stevenson‘s original classic 1886 novella Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.
